Macau should increasingly focus on China’s development, said the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (ANP), Zhang Dejiang on Tuesday at the end of a three-day official visit to the territory.

Zhang said that Macau should take advantage of China’s “development train” because, unlike other countries and regions, “there is a free ticket and a place reserved by the central government as a VIP,” in a clear reference to the Belt and Road and Greater Bay Area (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau), which aims to integrate the nine cities of the Pearl River Delta and the Special Administrative Regions of Macau and Hong Kong.

The Chinese official also mentioned the need for Macau to take advantage of the favourable measures granted by the central government to the Special Administrative Region, focusing on the growth of the territory, the adequate diversification of the economy and its sustainable development with the aim of achieving greater and better development.

Zhang Dejiang, speaking at a meeting with representatives of the city’s civil society, reaffirmed that China’s central government will do everything to support Macau’s development and recalled that it recently granted the Special Administrative Region 85 square kilometres of territorial waters to develop economic projects connected to the sea.

Zhang also said that measures are being considered to strengthen contacts between the Special Administrative Region and China, in particular by granting visas to residents of mainland China who wish to travel to the territory.

At the same meeting, the Chief Executive, Chui Sai On, gave assurances that the Macau Special Administrative Region will strive to improve public governance, promote economic diversification and support innovation and entrepreneurship among young people. (macauhub)
