Macau Chief Executive Chui Sai On praised Portugal for its positive response to the “Belt and Road” initiative and gave assurances that China’s strategy will allow Macau to grow further.
Chui, who spoke on Saturday during the celebrations of the Day of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities, recalled that Macau is historically linked to the Maritime Silk Road and that it was an important centre of international trade, exporting Chinese products such as silk, porcelain and tea to the whole world.
The Chief Executive also praised the contribution of the Portuguese and Macanese to the socio-economic development of Macau and gave assurances that the government will continue to work towards “preserving the multicultural characteristics of Macau society and the diversified development of the economy to ensure the well-being of the entire population, including that of the Portuguese and Macanese communities.”
The Consul General of Portugal in Macau, Vitor Sereno, said Portugal intends to make a significant contribution for to Macau to play a major role in the development of the “Belt and Road” strategy and be a bridge between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries.
The Consul General also reiterated Portugal’s readiness to participate actively in the training of bilingual staff and the promotion of the Portuguese language in Macau through a greater presence of Portuguese staff in the territory.
The Portuguese diplomat also considered that the 500-year relationship between Portugal and China is now, more than ever, a strategic priority for Portugal. (macauhub)
