The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau undersea tunnel, which extends over 6.7 kilometres, is due to be inaugurated on Friday, according to information released on Thursday by the coordinators of the project.
The bridge, which extends over 55 kilometres above and below water, includes a tunnel between two artificial islands 48 metres below the waterline due to the requirements of maritime navigation and the height limits imposed by aviation.
Construction of this tunnel has set some records, including making it the tunnel with the highest number of traffic lanes, the longest lifespan and the one that includes the most complex construction techniques.
With three lanes in each direction, a maximum speed of 100 kilometres per hour and a service life of 120 years, the tunnel complies with current regulations for infiltrations, fires, explosions and collisions, as well as possible damage caused by anchors.
Those responsible for the project also said that everything is being done to open the bridge to car traffic by the end of the year. (macauhub)
