The People’s Republic of China has donated 1,290 sacks of rice to Guinea-Bissau, which will be sent to 16 social charities headquartered in the capital, Bissau, and the formal donation took place on Tuesday at the premises of the Presidency of the Republic.
The Chinese ambassador, Jin Hongjun, said during the ceremony that the donation, worth 2 billion CFA francs (approximately 3 million euros), helps to meet the basic needs of the population.
“We believe that agriculture is fundamental in Guinea-Bissau, which is an agricultural country and 80% of the population is rural,” said the ambassador, noting that every year around 60 Guineans benefit from training provided by Chinese technicians, as well as agricultural equipment that is donated.
In response, the minister of Agriculture, Nicolau dos Santos said that the donation is of capital importance for the social organizations that will receive it, especially those who support the families of farmers who have suffered losses due to floods and drought in Guinea-Bissau in recent years.
