16 January 2018

The Parliamentary Palace of Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) is a “symbol of cooperation” between China and the West African island nation, as it is one of the “most iconic” projects resulting from this cooperation, the President of the National Assembly, the country’s parliament, Jorge Santos, said in Praia on Monday.

The President of the Parliament made the remarks as he received the key symbolising the delivery of the restored Palace, scheduled to open in March, made from the Chinese ambassador to Cape Verde, Du Xiaocong, according to the Inforpress news agency.

The Parliamentary Palace was inaugurated on 30 October 1985, on the tenth anniversary of independence, originally proclaimed on 5 July 1975.

Santos pointed noted that the People’s Republic of China had been one of the archipelago’s partners since the earliest days of independence and was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations.

Referring to cooperation between two countries, he said that a “big project” would be launched shortly, which is the Cabo Verde Economic and Exclusive Development Zone in Mindelo, for which China is a “strategic development partner.”

The Chinese ambassador said that the restoration project for the Parliamentary Palace is a “new starting point for friendship between my country and Cabo Verde.” (macauhub)
