Macau has to contribute to the development of the “Belt and Road”

Macau Chief Executive Chui Sai On gave assurances of his government’s determination to make the most of the advantages the “Belt and Road” initiative brings to the start of a new journey for the Special Administrative Region.

Chui, who spoke at the opening of the International “Belt and Road” and the Development of Macau Conference 2018, said it was an obligation and responsibility to participate actively in China’s central government initiative.

The Chief Executive reaffirmed that the location of Macau and its role as a bridge on the maritime silk route, the historic trade relationship between China and the West through Macau, the meeting of Chinese and Western cultures and the significant Chinese community around the world are unique advantages the territory brings to the “Belt and Road” initiative.

In his speech, Chui stressed the stability of Macau’s economy, the improvement of the quality of life of the population, strengthened regional and international cooperation and pledged the Government’s commitment to speed up the process of turning Macau into a World Centre for Tourism and Leisure and as a Platform of Services for Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-Speaking Countries.

The Chief Executive also gave assurances that Macau will continue to promote dovetailing of the Five-Year Development Plan of the Special Administrative Region with the 13th National Five-Year Plan, with the “Belt and Road” initiative and the future planning of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Great Bay, in order to inject greater vitality into the socio-economic development of Macau.
