The construction of Xai-Xai Airport, 200 kilometres from Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, is expected to start by next October, Mozambican daily newspaper O País reported.

The Mozambican daily said China awarded a US$60 million grant to build the airport bgeyond the US$45.3 million previously announced by China’s ambassador to Mozambique, Su Jian.

The government announced that two public tenders will be launched, one in China and another in Mozambique, for the construction of Xai-xai Airport in Gaza province.

Xai-Xai airport is expected to put Gaza province on the regional and international circuit.

It will also contribute to the development of the tourism sector in the southern region, attracting other activities considering the potential the province has in terms of mining, agriculture and agro-processing, among others.

Xai-Xai is currently the only provincial capital of Mozambique without an airport. (macauhub)
