The opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge on 24 October is of great political, economic and social significance, said the Chief Executive of Macau on Tuesday in the Zhuhai Border Post building.

“This structure is the first major construction to encompass Guangdong province and the two territories of Hong Kong and Macau in a single construction that crosses the sea and contributes to the theoretical and practical enrichment and development of the ‘One country, two systems principle,” said Chui Sai On.

He said that at the beginning of the work an aggregate work mechanism was created and solved some obstacles that had come up in the process, making room for both technological and political advances.

Once the bridge starts operating officially, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau will for the first time be connected by land and the new connection will contribute to the integration of the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Greater Bay, said the Chief Executive.

On an economic level, Chui Sai On added, the bridge, as well as solving the problem of access by road traffic, will also promote the joint economic development of the region.

The official inauguration ceremony of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge was held on Tuesday, in the presence of President Xi Jinping and the Chief Executives of the Special Administrative Regions of Macau, Chui Sai On and of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam, among other people (macauhub)
