Gaming was the economic sector that suffered most from typhoon Mangkut hitting Macau last September, with the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) estimating an indirect loss of 960 million patacas.
In a statement, DSEC announced an estimated total loss of 1.550 billion patacas (US$193.75 million), including 520 million patacas of direct losses and 1.033 billion patacas of indirect losses.
Estimates mainly include the economic losses of commercial property owners, as well as losses in housing and vehicles, municipal equipment/ facilities and parts of the public service system, among others.
DSEC said that wholesale and retail and catering activities suffered direct losses of 249 million patacas, followed by hotel and similar activities with 112 million patacas and construction with 94 million.
On 23 August 2017, direct and indirect economic losses were estimated at 12.55 billion patacas (US$ .57 billion) in Macau after typhoon Hato hit the region. (macauhub)
