The Government of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) and China’s National Development and Reform Commission are due to sign an agreement in Beijing next week to support Macau’s participation in the Belt and Road initiative, the government’s spokesman said.
The statement added that the Chief Executive, Chui Sai On, will travel to Beijing accompanied by a delegation from the Macau Special Administrative Region on 5 December to sign the agreement on behalf of the Macau SAR Government.
The document to be signed by the Macau Government and the central government of China aims to support Macau to use its specific advantages in the construction of the national Belt and Road initiative.
The Macau Special Administrative Region’s Five-Year Development Plan (2016-2020) outlines that the government intends to promote the organic integration of “One platform” in the “Belt and Road” initiative.
“Macau, through overseas Chinese and their families in Macau and the advantages of close ties with Portuguese-speaking countries and Southeast Asian countries, plays the role of a platform that promotes economic and trade cooperation between countries and regions along the ‘Belt and Road’, the interior of China and the Portuguese-speaking countries,” the statement said.
In the process of developing initiatives within the framework of Forum Macau, special consideration was given to the introduction of “Belt and Road” elements, cooperation was promoted in infrastructure between the countries and regions covered by the initiative and cooperation with the Portuguese-speaking countries, and multilateral cooperation between companies, which have been provided with broader market opportunities.
