Thirty percent of electricity production in Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) is expected to be provided by renewable sources by 2025, according to the Energy Sector Master Plan for 2018-2025, approved on Thursday by the Council of Ministers.

The spokesman for the meeting of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Culture, Abraão Vicente, said at the end of the meeting that the plan respects the commitments already undertaken by Cabo Verde at the Paris Conference (COP21), to exceed 50% of energy production from renewable sources by 2030.

The current rate of penetration of renewable energy in domestic production is 18%, according to Cape Verdean news agency Inforpress.

Vicente said that the government re-evaluated the “previous strategy of having 100% renewable energy by 2021, because technically it is not possible, and it is necessary for Cabo Verde to set more realistic targets.”

The goal, he added, is to minimise the costs of producing electricity, maintain the focus on wind energy and start “an ambitious programme” to develop solar energy in Cabo Verde. (macauhub)
