Japan funds modernisation of airport in capital of Timor-Leste

14 February 2019

The Japanese government will grant US$45 million to Timor-Leste (East Timor) next May for the refurbishment of part of Nicolau Lobato Airport in Dili, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said in a statement.

The statement from the Japanese agency said the project includes several of the airport’s facilities, such as the international passenger terminal and its equipment, the taxi and parking lot, the control tower and an electrical substation, as well as the access road to the airport area.

Portuguese news agency Lusa reported that a Japanese technical team visited Timor-Leste between 2 and 9 February 2 and JICA and the National Aviation Authority of Timor-Leste (ANATL) analysed the situation and prepared a preliminary report.

The memorandum on this funding is due to be signed in May, with work on the airport expected to start in September and be completed by 2022. (macauhub)
