Macau government secretary receives honorary doctorate in Portugal

11 March 2019

Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macau Government, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lisbon (UL) in Lisbon on Monday, the university said.

The homage, awarded following a proposal from the UL Institute of Education, is due to the fact that Alexis Tam has “promoted active policies to encourage the teaching and learning of Portuguese in non-higher education public and private schools where the number of students and Portuguese teachers has doubled.”

The statement from the University of Lisbon said that Tam’s promotion of teaching and learning of the Portuguese language went beyond Macau, increasing support to higher education institutions in China, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea and Japan.

This support was mainly provided through teacher training, the mobility of Portuguese-speaking teachers and the dissemination of teaching materials, the statement said.

The statement recalled that Alexis Tam Chon Weng was awarded the Order of Infant Dom Henrique in 2014, on the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities. (Macauhub)
