Mozambique intends to play an active role in building the Chinese “Belt and Road” initiative, President Filipe Nyusi said on Wednesday in Beijing as he was received by his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, according to the official Chinese press.
The Chinese project is “very important” for Mozambique and the African continent and “benefits” the sustainable development and growth of the world economy, Nyusi said at a ceremony at the People’s Palace.
Nyusi took the opportunity to offer his congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and said he wanted to “deepen the strategic partnership” with China in a number of areas.
Nyusi also praised the fact that China has chosen the former President of Mozambique Joaquim Chissano to join the strategic advisory team of the China-Africa Institute, made up of politicians and academics from China and Africa, saying that it is a sign of recognition and trust by the Chinese authorities.
President Xi Jinping highlighted the “important” position of Mozambique in the Maritime Silk Road, praising the country’s “active” participation in advancing the Chinese initiative.
President Filipe Nyusi began an official visit to China on Monday, which is scheduled to end on Saturday, during which he will meet with his counterpart Xi Jinping and take part in the forum.
This edition of the Forum is focused on the theme “Belt and Road Cooperation: Shaping the Brighter Shared Future,” with 124 countries and 29 international organisations already signing cooperation agreements with China under this initiative. (Macauhub)
