Chief Executive restates that Belt and Road is a strategic opportunity for Macau

The Macau Chief Executive said on Tuesday that the construction of the Belt and Road is a strategic opportunity that allows the territory to keep pace with international development, integrate into national development and promote its own development.

Chui Sai On, who spoke during the Symposium on the Belt and Road and Macau Development – 2019, said the Chinese initiative important because it contributes to the enrichment of the “One country, two systems” principle.

The Chief Executive said he was convinced that, with the support of the central government and the efforts of the entire population, Macau will make a great contribution to the construction of the Belt and Road.

Chui recalled that Macau has been integrating itself into the development process of Mainland China, liaising with general central government planning and its five-year development plan and positioning itself as a World Tourism and Leisure Centre and Services Platform for Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries.

Chui also said that Macau will create the RMB Transaction Settlement Centre for Portuguese-speaking Countries and a Platform for Financial Services between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.

The Chief Executive also noted that Macau will benefit from the establishment in Macau of a considerable number of Chinese who returned from abroad and extensive relations with the countries of Southeast Asia, Portuguese-speaking countries and those of the European Union, for the construction a bilingual training programme in Chinese and Portuguese, and a cultural exchange centre between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.
