The docks company of the Brazilian state of São Paulo (Codesp) plans to open a representative office in China in the second half of the year, said the chairman of the Port Authority of Santos, cited by the Brazilian press.
Casemiro Tércio de Carvalho also said that the office, to be opened jointly with the government of the State of São Paulo, will be in Shanghai and that the person who will direct the permanent representation has already been hired, and that the office is scheduled to be opened in November.
Tércio de Carvalho travelled to Ningbo, an industrial and port city in China’s Zhejiang Province, last week to attend an international meeting, during which he presented the investments planned for the Port of Santos.
Tércio participated in the 5th Maritime Silk Road International Cooperation Forum, attended by representatives of some of the largest ports in the world, as well as shipping and logistics companies and those from the maritime industry.
China was the largest customer at that port in 2018, accounting for 21% or US$10.34 billion of all goods imported by Brazil through that port, and was also the largest export destination in 2017 with a value of US$8.5 billion and a total of 18.15 million tonnes.
Codesp is a Brazilian state-owned company, in which the federal government has a 99.9% stake and the Santos City Hall the remaining 0.01%. It was founded on 7 November 1980 to replace Companhia Docas de Santos, which was private. (Macauhub)
