A subsidiary company of the Chinese state-owned CITIC group will build 35,000 homes in Mozambique under a recently signed agreement with the Housing Development Fund (FFH), the mediaFAX website reported.

The company is expected to build 15,000 homes in the south, 10,000 in the centre and another 10,000 in the north of the country, according to the terms of the contract.

This project aims to build housing at a cost that is accessible to young people and civil servants, who have problems getting a home of their own, and low-cost construction techniques are planned.

Arlindo Munguambe, president of the FFH, said the project aims to cover all provinces, and the cost of acquisition should range between US$30,000 and US$40,000 for each house.

The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources Joao Machatine, who took part in the ceremony, called on the parties involved in the current project not to fail like so many others that have never been executed.

China’s economic and trade adviser in Mozambique, Tom Hu, said signing the agreement followed negotiations between the two countries’ governments, adding that the project also addresses the needs of the populations affected by Cyclones Idai and Kenneth. (Macauhub)
