Mozambique to select a consultant for Mphanda Nkuwa dam project by the end of the year

5 August 2019

Mozambique will select the consulting firm that will provide services for the legal and financial structuring of the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project in Tete province by the end of this year, according to Portuguese news agency Lusa.

Nine companies, selected through an international tender in which 18 entities competed, were pre-qualified for the next phase to select the company that will provide these services.

The period for receiving and opening bids from the nine pre-qualified consultancy companies ended on 1 August.

The Mphanda Nkuwa Dam will be built 60 kilometres from the Cahora Bassa dam.

The selected company will work with the Mpanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project Implementation Office.

The company should also advise on the selection of the strategic partner to join Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and Hidroelétrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) in the development of future dam infrastructure.

Mphanda Nkuwa’s construction plan was approved in September 2007.

The venture is valued at US$2.3 billion.

When the works are complete, the dam is expected to produce 1,500 megawatts of electricity, of which 80 megawatts may be earmarked for export. (Macauhub)
