The Portuguese International Centre for Training in Conference Interpreting, inaugurated on Thursday by the Macau Polytechnic Institute (IPM), aims to strengthen the role of Macau as a services platform for trade and economic cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, said the president of the IPM, Im Sio Kei.
The Centre, which is the result of the long-standing cooperation between the Directorate-General for Interpretation of the European Union and the IPM, will further strengthen cooperation between Macau, the Portuguese-speaking countries and regions of mainland China to provide Portuguese language training to staff and increasing the quality of human resources.
At the inauguration ceremony, Im Sio Kei, looked back on the various activities organised by the Macau Polytechnic Institute and by the Directorate-General for Interpretation of the European Commission (DG SCIC), emphasising the importance of this partnership that is reflected, among others, in the success of the professional conference interpreting training course, held by the IPM for the last 15 years.
The participants in the training include teachers from Macau, mainland China and several higher education institutions in Portugal, as well as interpreters of ministries and local governments. Translators and interpreters from various departments of the Government of the Macau Special Administrative Region and China International Radio also benefitted from the training courses.
Through this training programme, the IPM has promoted the EU model of interpreting training among higher education institutions in mainland China, actively contributing to the development of interpretation in Portuguese in Macau, in China and Asia more generally.
Im Sio Kei also said that the Centre strengthens cooperation between the IPM and DGSCIC, as a result of boosting training of teachers of Chinese-English interpretation of IPM, in educational support and in the internships of post-graduates on the Masters Course in Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation, and ensures the continued supply of an intensive course in conference interpretation.
The creation of the Portuguese International Centre for Training in Conference Interpreting and the launch of the Master’s Course in Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation are important to consolidate the capacity to train interpreters of excellence in Macau and strengthen the professional and institutional links between the European Union, Macau and mainland China.
