São Tomé and Príncipe wants to increase cooperation with the People’s Republic of China

São Tomé and Príncipe wants to increase cooperation with the People’s Republic of China in areas such as energy, infrastructure construction, fisheries, health and culture, said the president of the São Tomé parliament, Delfim Neto, on a six-day visit to China.

The president of the São Tomé and Príncipe parliament was speaking at the end of a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Li Zhanshu, who said that China is willing to work with São Tomé and Príncipe in supporting the fundamental interests of the two countries.

Neves, quoted by the Xinhua news agency, said that São Tomé and Príncipe “resolutely accedes to the ‘One China’ principle,” which highlights that Taiwan is part of the People’s Republic of China.

Wang Cheng, vice-president of the National People’s Congress in June visited São Tomé and Príncipe, and at the time signed an agreement to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly between the parliaments of the two countries.

After the re-establishment of diplomatic relations on 26 December 2016, the governments of the two countries agreed to deepen two-way relations.

As a result of the resumption of diplomatic ties, São Tomé and Príncipe has also been admitted to Forum Macau, an organisation for economic and trade exchange between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries.

The latest figures on trade between the two countries released by Forum Macau shows that China and São Tomé and Príncipe traded goods valued at US$5.43 million in the period from January to August 2019. (macauhub)
