Macau received 2.85 million visitors in January this year, a year-on-year drop of 16.8% due to the pneumonia epidemic caused by the new type of coronavirus (COVID-19), the region’s Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said.
Visitors stayed in the territory for an average of 1.2 days, which was the same as seen in January 2019.
The number of visitors from mainland China totalled 2.1 million, which was a decline of 14.9% year-on-year, although those from Zhuhai (319,200) and Guangzhou (235,100) increased by 9.3% and 14.4%, respectively.
The number of visitors from South Korea (43,100), Hong Kong (476,000) and Taiwan (70,300) dropped by 56.6%, 10.8% and 19.0%, respectively, on year.
Notably the number of people who arrived in Macau via the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macau bridge totalled 273,600, a year-on-year fall of 38.3%. (macauhub)
