Covid-19 leads to postponement of national fairs in Angola

26 March 2020

The scheduled dates for holding the five annual national production fairs organised by the C. Calas company in Angola and the provincial authorities have been changed due to the measures adopted by the President of the Republic to contain the spread of the new coronavirus, said the company’s chief executive.

Carlos dos Santos Calas told newspaper Jornal de Angola that the company was acting in line with guidance from the health authorities in order to reduce, as much as possible, the economic impact of this global threat.

He also said that the change in the schedule, “may require a budgetary readjustment,” of all the events, whose expenses were assessed ahead of time and, if there is a significant increase in costs, will have to be boosted with renegotiation with the local authorities.

Expo Kwanza-Norte, which is one of the fairs, was due to take place from 28 to 31 May, in Ndalatando, followed by Expo-Uíge, from 3 to 7 June, ahead of Expo Lunda-Norte, in the period between 20 and 25 July, before Expo Kwanza-Sul (10 to 13 September) and Expo-Huambo (18 to 21 September).

As well as hosting Expo Kwanza-Norte, Uíge and Kwanza Sul, last year the company also organised Expo-Cacuso, in Malanje, and the first edition of Expo-Hotel, promoted in Luanda by the Association of Hotels and Resorts in Angola, together with the Ministries of Tourism and Industry, with a view to bolstering business in those sectors.

With 12 direct employees, C. Calas Angola focuses on promoting agri-business, particularly family-based agriculture, but this year the business is including large plantations, whose owners presented ambitious programmes to hold annual exhibitions. (macauhub)
