Portugal requests support from China to acquire equipment and medical products

The government of China is available to help Portugal to acquire equipment and other types of medical products in the country that is needed to help combat the new coronavirus, the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Portuguese counterpart Augusto Santos Silva, according to Chinese news agency Xinhua.

During a telephone conversation which took place at the request of the Portuguese authorities, the Chinese minister told Santos Silva he was aware that the Covid-19 pandemic is spreading rapidly in Europe and said that China, as a strategic partner of Portugal, “respects the tradition of mutual support.”

“China will help Portugal to acquire the materials you need in China, even taking into account the high domestic demand, particularly to avoid the appearance of a second wave of Covid-19,” Wang Yi told Santos Silva.

The Chinese foreign minister also told his Portuguese counterpart that China is willing to share its experience with Portugal for the prevention and control of Covid-19, “which can be done remotely.”

Santos Silva congratulated China on the progress made in the fight against the epidemic and added that Portugal is available to deepen cooperation with China in this common fight against the new coronavirus.

“The epidemic in China was effectively controlled and medical equipment produced in China is very important for Europe to fight against the pandemic,” said Santos Silva, quoted by the news agency.

The Portuguese Foreign Affairs minister restated the request to the Chinese authorities to support and facilitate the purchase of medical products and added that the Portuguese government will do everything in its reach to ensure the health and wellbeing of Chinese citizens and students in Portugal.
