In a bid to enhance cooperation in the education sector in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), three tertiary institutions from Macao, Guangzhou and Hong Kong have signed an agreement to establish a GBA Portuguese language education alliance, which is aimed at promoting student exchange, academic seminars and research in the teaching of the Portuguese language.
The agreement was signed on 8 June by the Macao Polytechnic Institute, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and the School of Professional and Continuing Education of the University of Hong Kong in a signing ceremony hosted by video link.
During the signing ceremony, the President of the Macao Polytechnic Institute, Professor Im Sio Kei, noted that the GBA Portuguese language education alliance was the first ever alliance for the teaching and research in the Portuguese language under the framework of GBA cooperation. He added that the Macao Polytechnic Institute’s century-old history in Portuguese language education could contribute to the development of Portuguese language teaching and research in the GBA.
For his part, the President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Professor Shi Youqi, said that the establishment of this alliance marked a new milestone in cooperation in the higher education sector in the GBA.
Director of the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education, Professor William Lee, said that the Portuguese language education alliance would also facilitate the development of the Belt and Road initiative as more and more Portuguese-speaking countries have taken part in this initiative.
