Macau and Guangdong plan to take all necessary steps to integrate both regions’ development policies in the Chinese central government’s “One Band, One Route” initiative, specifically by transforming Macau into an international tourism hub and economic platform.

The decision was made during the visit by Macau Chief Executive Chui Sai On to Guangzhou last Friday and his meetings with the governor of Guangdong province, Ma Xingrui, and the secretary of the provincial committee of the Chinese Communist Party, Hu Chunhua.

An official note indicates that the two governments agreed to boost the two sides’ participation in “One Band, One Route” by enhancing coordination between the Office of the Chief Executive of Macau and the Office for Hong Kong and Macau Affairs of Guangdong Province.

Agreement was also reached for Macau and Guangdong to strengthen ties in the areas of trade and investment, using Macau as a services platform for trade cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries and Southeast Asian countries.

The two governments will continue to publicise their advantages abroad, jointly participating in fairs and conventions to promote bilateral cooperation and investment involving the two regions and other countries, besides working to further the Greater Gulf Region comprising Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.

Macau and Guangdong also agreed that promotion of tourism and Chinese traditional medicine are important aspects to develop with overseas Chinese associations and the Portuguese language countries, so they can be integrated in the “One Band, One Route” initiative.

Finally, the two governments indicated their determination to strengthen relations between the two regions’ populations, especially among young people, in order to create conditions enabling them to set up and develop their own businesses.

Before arriving in Guangzhou the Macau chief executive had visited Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, with the same agenda: to develop and reinforce cooperation between the two regions with a view to participating in China’s “One Band, One Route” strategy. (Macauhub)
