Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) from 16 to 18 June will host a meeting between businesspeople of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) and China under the theme "Promoting opportunities for economic cooperation between China and the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries," Cape Verdean investment agency Cabo Verde TradeInvest said onThursday. Ana Lima Barber also told the Inforpress news agency that the meeting is part of the framework to strengthen economic and business cooperation between China and the CPLP and aims to promote business opportunities in each country.

The best journalism about Macau will now be annually awarded a prize of 10,000 euros, under a partnership between the Portuguese Press Club and Portuguese-language newspaper Jornal Tribuna de Macau (JTM), announced on Wednesday in Macau José Rocha Dinis, the JTM manager. The Lusophone Journalism Award for all media professionals from Portuguese-speaking countries, is aimed mainly at "encouraging the development of the Portuguese language," said the JTM manager on the sidelines of a conference on "The role the press is losing" held at the Macau Military Club.

Economist Rodrigo Manuel Ferreira Brum will take on the role of Deputy Secretary-General of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macau) at the suggestion of Portugal, the Consul General of Portugal in Macau said on Friday. The Consul General Vítor Sereno also said the delegate of the Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade of Portugal in Macau, Maria João Bonifácio, will be the new delegate for Portugal at Forum Macau, replacing him in the role.

The government of Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) and the United Nations (UN) signed a working document for 2017 which provides aid to the West African nation in the amount of US$16.6 million, the last payment of the five-year programme signed by the two sides in 2012. The United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for Cabo Verde for 2012-2016 was extended until 2017 because of the election period last year and the new priorities set out by the current government.

Casino Royal, the first gaming venue in Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) opened on Thursday on the island of Sal. The project is attached to the Hilton Hotel and cost 5 million euros, the Cape Verdean press reported. The casino had been operating on an experimental basis since December 2016 and has 117 slot machines and 11 gaming tables. It is located on Avenida dos Hotéis in Santa Maria, Sal, the most popular island for tourists on the archipelago.

The number of hotel units in Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) grew by 3.1% in 2016 to 223, according to the annual inventory conducted by the National Statistics Institute (INE) and published on Wednesday in Praia. The existing hotel unitsat the end of last year had an accommodation capacity of 11,345 rooms, 18,382 beds and 24,376 places, representing increases of 7.6%, 1.8% and 6.2% respectively, compared to 2015.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) grew by 3.6% in 2016, more than doubling the rate of 1.5% recorded in 2015, according to provisional data released by the archipelago's government on Tuesday. Finance Minister Olavo Correia said during a meeting with senior government officials that public debt increased from 127.8% of GDP in 2015 to 128.6% in 2016 and the budget deficit fell from 4.6% of GDP in 2015 to 3.5% in 2016.

Trade between China and Portuguese-speaking countries totalled US$8.281 billion in January 2017, which was a year-on-year increase of 7.52%, according to official figures from China released by Forum Macau. Angola and Brazil accounted in January for 92% of trade between China and the eight Portuguese-speaking countries with a total of US$7.625 billion.

The Bank of Cabo Verde (BCV) decided to suspend the business of Novo Banco and transfer customers' deposits and some loans to the Caixa Económica de Cabo Verde bank, announced the Cape Verdean central bank in a statement issued on Wednesday in Praia. The BCV also reported that Novo Banco was prohibited from lending and investing funds in certain types of assets and receiving deposits, and the authorisation to conduct banking activity will be revoked "at a time and when the BCV deems it," which will be followed by the administrative liquidation procedure laid down in the law on credit institutions.

The ambassadors of Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and Timor-Leste (East Timor) in China expressed the appreciation of their respective governments for the results achieved in economic and trade cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, according to official information published in Macau.

Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) received over 644,000 tourists in 2016, a figure that represents an increase of 13.2% over that recorded a year earlier, according to the Tourism Statistics for the fourth quarter and for the whole of 2016 published by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The number of overnight stays registered in hotel establishments throughout the year reached 4.09 million, 10.3% more than in 2015, INE also said, adding that UK tourists spent the most time in the archipelago, with an average stay of 9.1 nights.
