The value of trade between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries fell by 25.73 percent in 2015 to US$98.474 billion, a real loss of US$34.106 billion, according to official Chinese figures. The only positive changes in the value of trade occurred in Timor Leste (East Timor - US$106.67 million or +76.48 percent) and Sao Tome and Principe (US$7,9 million or +37.99 percent).

The bleak economic outlook in key markets for Portugal such as Angola, Brazil and China, may lead to a drop in Portuguese exports to those countries, according to a recent report by the European Commission. The document also said that in addition to a fall in Portuguese exports to these countries, there could also be a decrease in foreign direct investment (FDI) from these countries in Portugal.

The completion of the motorway linking the municipal headquarters of Nzeto to the city of Soyo, in Angola's northern Zaire province, is scheduled for June 2017, said the director-general of the Angolan subsidiary of Chinese state-owned Sinohydro Engineering Bureau No. 4 Co. Ltd. Liu Yawming, who was speaking during a visit by the provincial governor of Zaire, José Joanes André, to the works in progress, said the financial impasse that prevented the progress of the work had been overcome and that work should resume soon based no a guarantee of financing through a new credit line granted by China to Angola.

State-owned China CWZX Real Estate Development will support the modernisation of the agricultural sector in Guinea-Bissau under a recently signed agreement with the National Association of Guinea-Bissau Farmers (ANAG). The president of ANAG, Jaime Gomes, told Macauhub in Bissau that the agreement provides for the supply of tractors and training in maintenance and conservation of agricultural products.

Trade between Macau and the city of Zhongshan in 2015 increased 13.9 percent over the previous year and reached US$230 million, the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) said Monday. The announcement was made after a meeting in Macau between a delegation from Zhongshan headed by the vice president of the Chinese municipality Yang Wen Long, the president and executive member of the IPIM, Jackson Chang and Glória Ung, respectively, to discuss bilateral cooperation agreements signed in 2015.

Brazil has overtaken China in the production of chicken meat to become the world's second largest producer, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), cited by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA). Brazilian poultry producers last year produced 13.146 million tons of chicken meat, an annual increase of 3.58 percent, while China, according to the USDA, produced 13.025 million tons.

Portugal granted 766 golden visas in 2015, almost half the 1,526 granted in 2014, and the citizens of China were once again granted the highest number of visas, according to data recently released by the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF).The Residence Permits for Investment activity (ARI) accounted for 95 visas in December, 23 more than in November, totalling an investment of 59.3 million euros.

China bought 191.6 million tons of iron ore from Brazil in 2015, a 12.1 percent increase over 2014, according to data from China's General Administration of Customs. The Brazilian iron ore accounted for 20.1 percent of total Chinese imports of this commodity in 2015 - an increase from the 18.3 percent weight recorded in 2014, according to Reuters.

The government of Angola opened on Wednesday, a public tender for Chinese companies to build infrastructure in the provinces of Luanda and Bié under the financial cooperation agreement signed with the China Development Bank, to fund Priority Public Investment Projects. The work will be carried out in Cacuaco (Luanda), Cuito and Cunje (Bié) and in the city of Uige.

The Chinese brand Huawei Tuesday in Lisbon, Portugal, opened a store to sell the products it manufactures including smartphones such as the Huawei P8, the Nexus 6P and the Huawei Watch. Pedro Ferreira, Managing Director of Huawei Portugal said the store was one of the Chinese brand's first in Europe.

The governor of the Chinese province of Guangdong has said he wants to create conditions to develop an economic and trade cooperation platform with the Portuguese-speaking countries. Zhu Xiaodan spoke in Guangzhou during the meeting of the Guangdong Provincial People's Assembly, where he presented the province's Economic Development Plan for the period between 2016 and 2020, which stipulates economic growth of 7 percent.

Portuguese insurance company Fidelidade, acquired from the Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) by Chinese group Fosun, has become the first company in Portugal to have direct exposure to the Chinese stock market, after receiving a quota of US$700 million to invest in the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets, according to information provided to the markets. Fidelidade has been authorised to invest in the Chinese market through the Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor mechanism, a programme created in 2003 that allows a small group of foreign companies to invest in 'A Shares' denominated in the Chinese currency (yuan) and comprises US$81,1 billion in capital.
