Macau received over 14.7 million visitors from January to June, a number that represents a marginal increase of 0.1% year on year, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. The visitors who entered Macau in the first half of the year, with a monthly average of 2.46 million people, mostly came from mainland China (9.74 million or 66% of the total), followed by people from Hong Kong (3.05 million).

Annual inflation in Macau in June continued to slow down, posting an increase of 2.26% year on year, or a decrease of 0.38 percentage points compared to May, reported the region's Statistics and Census Bureau. Growth in June was mainly due mainly to rising car park rates as well as the prices of meals bought outside the home and tobacco, the Bureau said.

Twenty-five employees from the government tourism agencies of Angola, Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Timor-Leste (East Timor) took part in Macau in training activities organised by the Macau Government Tourist Office, between April and July. Training of the last of three groups "successfully" ended last week. The training included an internship at the Tourism Services Office.

The Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) and China's State Administration of Taxation in Beijing signed an additional protocol to the agreement to avoid double taxation and prevent tax evasion, officials said in Macau. The Additional Protocol, the third, according to the statement released by the Office of the Secretary for Economy and Finance includes reducing the tax burden for the payment of "royalties" on leasing of aircraft and ships, whose rate decreased from 7% to 5%.

VIP baccarat remained the main source of gross revenue from Macau casinos in the first half of 2016, according to data released Monday by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau. Gross revenue from Macau casinos amounted to 107.787 billion patacas (US$13.473 billion), and revenues from VIP baccarat totalled 56.980 billion patacas (US$7.1225 billion), accounting for 52 8% of the total.

The Macau government hired Chinese company "CCCC Highway Consultants Co., Ltd. Macau Branch" to study the feasibility of building two underwater tunnels next to the Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, the oldest in the territory, officials said. The Directorate of Land, Public Works and Transport also said that the company chosen, out of four that were consulted, put forward the lowest price for the study - 7.22 million patacas (US$902,500).

Gross revenues from casinos from the mass market represented 53.1 percent of the total in the first half of 2016, an increase of 10 percentage points compared to 43.1 percent in the same period of 2015, according to the Office of the Secretary for Economy and Finance. In a statement the Office also reported that the gross revenue of the VIP market, in turn, fell 17.3 percent year on year in the first half, while the mass market contracted by just 3.6 percent.

Malam Becker Camara also said during a seminar on Guinea-Bissau organised by the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) jointly with the Permanent Office of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese Speaking Countries (Macau), the Macau platform can help with the internationalisation of products from their country.

The bridge connecting Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong is ready to receive the pavement layer following completion of its deck Wednesday with the placement of the last span, English-language newspaper China Daily reported. The newspaper reported "there are still many challenges ahead before the project is completed," including a 6.7-kilometre undersea tunnel, whose construction difficulties have caused delays.

Macau's trade deficit from January to May reached 23.754 billion patacas (US$2.969 billion), an improvement of 24.6 percent year on year, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. In the same period of 2015, the trade deficit in Macau amounted to 31.512 billion patacas (US$3.939 billion), as a result of exports of 4.526 billion patacas and imports of 36.038 billion patacas.

Macau received over 12.4 million visitors from January to May, a number that represents a marginal drop of 0.8 percent over the same period of 2015, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. The number of visitors from mainland China (8.2 million) and Hong Kong (2.5 million) dropped 1.5 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively, in annual terms, but visitors from South Korea (265,600) and Taiwan (424,400) increased 1.3 percent and 10.2 percent, respectively.

China's Guangdong province plans to make use of the specific adavantages Macau ahs to offer as a platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, the governor of the province, Zhu Xiaodan, said Tuesday in Macau. During the 2016 Guangdong-Macau Joint Cooperation Conference Zhu also said that there were plans to support companies from both regions to invest in countries in the "One Belt, One Road" route and to increase cooperation in the Guangdong and Macau international tourism industry.

Consumer prices in Macau in May continued to slow, with year on year inflation at a rate of 1.64 percent, or 38 basis points less than in April, said the region's Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC). A chart provided by DSEC in the statement on May's CPI shows that the general index has been falling since May 2015, when inflation totalled 5.5 percent.

European companies have every advantage in continuing to use Macau as a services platform for economic and trade cooperation with China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, said in Brussels the president of the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM). In Brussels as part of the delegation of the "9+2 Group" currently visiting Belgium and Portugal, the assistant advisor to the Commission for Development and Reform of Guangdong province, Wei Jizhang suggested creating a fund for cooperation with the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region (9+2) which could be based on the model of the European Union's Cooperation Fund.

Macau can support Chinese companies that want to expand business in the Portuguese-speaking countries and markets throughout the "One Belt, One Road,", strategy said Thursday the president of the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM). Jackson Cheong also said that Macau can make use of its advantages to help the countries that are part of the "One Belt, One Road" strategy by providing cooperation services between the industrial and financial sectors and characteristic financial services as well as by assisting the companies from inland China to enter world and Portuguese-speaking markets.

Gross revenue from Macau casinos fell in May for the 24th consecutive month and stood at 18.389 billion patacas (US$2.298 billion), an annual contraction of 9.6 percent, according to the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ). Accumulated revenues from January to May reached 91.906 billion patacas (US$11.488 billion), which represents a decrease of 11.9 percent when compared to the amount recorded in the same period of 2015.
