Xu Yingzhen of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce is since last week the new secretary-general of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Forum Macau), indicates an official announcement. Formerly the commercial counsellor of the ministry’s Department of American and Oceanian Affairs, Xu took office on Thursday as secretary-general of the Forum Macau Permanent Secretariat.

Macau’s population stood at 652,500 people at the end of the first half-year, up 0.5 percent or 3,400 people over the end-first-quarter figure, the Statistics and Census Service announced. The figures indicate that the female population of 332,600 accounted for 51 percent of the total. In year-on-year terms, the population counted 9,600 more people than at the end of the first half of 2015, up 1.49 percent.

Monthly credit granted to Macau’s private sector was up 1.4 percent in June to 403 billion patacas (US$50 billion), reports the Macau Monetary Authority. The bulletin with June 2016 monetary and financial statistics also indicates that most of that amount was denominated in patacas and Hong Kong dollars: 116.7 billion in patacas and the equivalent of 262.4 billion patacas in Hong Kong dollars.

Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU Macau, pertaining to Portugal’s state-held Caixa Geral de Depósitos financial group) closed the first half of 2016 with year-on-year growth of 17 percent in net results, which amounted to 278.57 million patacas (US$34.8 million), said its chief executive officer Pedro Cardoso.

Gross casino gaming revenue in Macau fell 4.5 percent to 17.774 billion patacas (US$2.221 billion) in July, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) reports. The July figure (the 26th consecutive monthly decrease since June 2014) is the lowest since December 2010, when gross casino gaming revenue was 18.883 billion patacas.

Macau’s trade deficit improved 23 percent year-on-year to 28.499 billion patacas (US$3.562 billion) in the first half of the year, the Statistics and Census Service reports. In the first six months of 2015 Macau’s trade deficit was 37.314 billion patacas (US$4.651 billion), resulting from exports of 5.453 billion patacas and imports of 42.667 billion patacas.

Twenty-five executives and technicians from the traditional medicine sector in Brazil, Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and Timor-Leste (East Timor) took part in a symposium in Macau organised by the Training Centre of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macau), according to official information. The conference, which began on 18 July was held at the Guangdong-Macau Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry-park, whose facilities were visited on Wednesday by the executives and technicians in order to see current development.

Macau received over 14.7 million visitors from January to June, a number that represents a marginal increase of 0.1% year on year, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. The visitors who entered Macau in the first half of the year, with a monthly average of 2.46 million people, mostly came from mainland China (9.74 million or 66% of the total), followed by people from Hong Kong (3.05 million).

Annual inflation in Macau in June continued to slow down, posting an increase of 2.26% year on year, or a decrease of 0.38 percentage points compared to May, reported the region's Statistics and Census Bureau. Growth in June was mainly due mainly to rising car park rates as well as the prices of meals bought outside the home and tobacco, the Bureau said.

Twenty-five employees from the government tourism agencies of Angola, Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Timor-Leste (East Timor) took part in Macau in training activities organised by the Macau Government Tourist Office, between April and July. Training of the last of three groups "successfully" ended last week. The training included an internship at the Tourism Services Office.

The Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) and China's State Administration of Taxation in Beijing signed an additional protocol to the agreement to avoid double taxation and prevent tax evasion, officials said in Macau. The Additional Protocol, the third, according to the statement released by the Office of the Secretary for Economy and Finance includes reducing the tax burden for the payment of "royalties" on leasing of aircraft and ships, whose rate decreased from 7% to 5%.

VIP baccarat remained the main source of gross revenue from Macau casinos in the first half of 2016, according to data released Monday by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau. Gross revenue from Macau casinos amounted to 107.787 billion patacas (US$13.473 billion), and revenues from VIP baccarat totalled 56.980 billion patacas (US$7.1225 billion), accounting for 52 8% of the total.

The Macau government hired Chinese company "CCCC Highway Consultants Co., Ltd. Macau Branch" to study the feasibility of building two underwater tunnels next to the Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, the oldest in the territory, officials said. The Directorate of Land, Public Works and Transport also said that the company chosen, out of four that were consulted, put forward the lowest price for the study - 7.22 million patacas (US$902,500).

Gross revenues from casinos from the mass market represented 53.1 percent of the total in the first half of 2016, an increase of 10 percentage points compared to 43.1 percent in the same period of 2015, according to the Office of the Secretary for Economy and Finance. In a statement the Office also reported that the gross revenue of the VIP market, in turn, fell 17.3 percent year on year in the first half, while the mass market contracted by just 3.6 percent.

Malam Becker Camara also said during a seminar on Guinea-Bissau organised by the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) jointly with the Permanent Office of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese Speaking Countries (Macau), the Macau platform can help with the internationalisation of products from their country.

The bridge connecting Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong is ready to receive the pavement layer following completion of its deck Wednesday with the placement of the last span, English-language newspaper China Daily reported. The newspaper reported "there are still many challenges ahead before the project is completed," including a 6.7-kilometre undersea tunnel, whose construction difficulties have caused delays.

Macau's trade deficit from January to May reached 23.754 billion patacas (US$2.969 billion), an improvement of 24.6 percent year on year, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. In the same period of 2015, the trade deficit in Macau amounted to 31.512 billion patacas (US$3.939 billion), as a result of exports of 4.526 billion patacas and imports of 36.038 billion patacas.

Macau received over 12.4 million visitors from January to May, a number that represents a marginal drop of 0.8 percent over the same period of 2015, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. The number of visitors from mainland China (8.2 million) and Hong Kong (2.5 million) dropped 1.5 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively, in annual terms, but visitors from South Korea (265,600) and Taiwan (424,400) increased 1.3 percent and 10.2 percent, respectively.
