Gross gaming revenue in Macau's casino in April fell for the 23rd consecutive month to 17.341 billion patacas (US$2.167 billion), said the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ). In April, which continued the contraction that began in June 2014, gross revenue contracted by 9.5 percent in monthly terms.

In 2015 the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) bank posted a net profit of 510.3 million patacas (US$65.3 million), or an increase of 15.1 percent compared to 443.3 million patacas recorded in 2014, the bank said. Loans to customers increased by 21.6 percent, with the main drivers of growth being loans to retail customers and small and medium-sized enterprises and deposits registered an increase of 21.6 percent, mainly as a result of an increase in deposits of retail customers, companies and institutions.

Macau received 7.45 million visitors during the first quarter of the year, an annual increase of 0.6 percent, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. The number of visitors from mainland China (4.94 million) fell 1.7 percent but those from South Korea (173,900), Hong Kong (1.55 million) and Taiwan (250,800) increased 3.1 percent, 3.6 percent and 11.6 percent, respectively, in the first three months of the year.

The Macau inflation rate reached 4.21 percent in the 12 months ending in March compared to the previous 12 months, according to data made public by the Statistics and Census Bureau (SEC). The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 4.21 percent, driven mainly by increases in alcohol and tobacco prices (+26.85 percent), education (+6.43 percent) and housing and fuels (+6.09 percent).

The Macau economy is expected to grow again in 2017, at a rate of 0.7 percent, after contracting 7.2 percent this year. This year's contraction is already lower than in 2015 when it totalled 20.3 percent, according to the latest forecasts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF, which for the first time includes in its "World Economic Outlook" economic forecasts for Macau, is more conservative than the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), which in March projected real economic growth for Macau in 2017 of 4.6 percent.

A delegation from Macau is due to attend a meeting between businesspeople from China and the Portuguese-speaking countries - "Guinea-Bissau in 2016" - taking place on 9 and 10 April in Bissau, said the Macau Institute for Trade and Investment Promotion (IPIM). IPIM, which organised the Macau delegation, reported that the delegation took part Thursday in the "Business Opportunities Forum between China, Portugal and the Macau Special Administrative Region," held in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

Guinea-Bissau will receive 150 official and business delegations for a meeting in Bissau of businesspeople from China and the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries, the coordinator of the meeting's technical office said recently. Giving an update on preparations for the meeting, coordinator Bruno Jauad gave assurances that "everything is ready" to welcome the delegations to Bissau on 9, 10 and 11 April.

Gross revenues from gaming and gambling in Macau in March fell for the 22nd consecutive month by registering a year on year change of -16.3 percent to 17.981 billion patacas (US$2.247 billion), according to official figures. The figures reported by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) showed that gross revenues started falling in January 2014, with a drop of 3.7 percent. Since then that downward trend has continued.

The inauguration of the Exhibition Centre for Food from Portuguese Speaking Countries is the continuation of the work that the Macau government has been developing in the relationship between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, the executive member of IPIM Glória Batalha Ung, said Thursday. "From now on entrepreneurs who want to find out about products from Portuguese-speaking countries can come here to the Exhibition Centre or our electronic portal," added the executive member of the Macau Institute for Trade and Investment Promotion (IPIM) according to local Portuguese-language newspaper Tribuna de Macau.

Macau recorded a trade deficit of 10.181 billion patacas (US$1.272 billion) in January and February, a 24.1 percent improvement against the deficit recorded in the same period of 2015, reported the region's Statistics and Census Bureau. The deficit registered in the first two months of 2016 was due to the fact that exports grew 2.1 percent to 1.682 billion patacas and imports fell by 21.2 percent to 11.864 billion patacas.

Macau should return to economic growth in 2017, the year in which, according to experts from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) there will be a return to positive values with a real rate of 4.6 percent, according to the latest report on the territory. This positive growth rate occurs after three consecutive years of negative growth, of minus 0.9 percent in 2014, minus 20.3 percent in 2015 and a forecast for this year of minus 2.7 percent.

Macau received 5.09 million visitors in January and February, a decrease of 1.0 percent compared to the same period of 2015, reported the region's Statistics and Census Bureau. The Bureau also said the number of visitors from mainland China - 3.45 million or 68 percent of the total - fell 3.1 percent in annual terms, in contrast to South Korea (132,200) and Taiwan (172.4000), which saw increases of 5.8 percent and 14.1 percent, respectively.

The 2016 of the Macau International Environmental Cooperation Forum (MIECF) has 50 participants from Portuguese-speaking countries, said Irene Lau, executive director of the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM). Under the theme "Green Economy - Opportunities for Waste Management", from 31 march to 16 April MIECF 2016 will bring 400 organisations from 19 countries and regions and 45 speakers to Macau.

Annual inflation in Macau in February showed a 3.88 percent increase, marginally higher than that recorded in January (+ 3.81 percent), reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. The bureau explained the growth seen in February with rising prices of meals bought away from home, the rise in rents of car parks and houses, as well as the increase in prices of vegetables.

The President of the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) said in Taipei that trade between Macau and Taiwan reached US$181 million in 2015, representing an increase of 1.3 percent over the previous year . Jackson Chang also recalled, at a seminar on the exchange between companies from Macau and Taiwan, that commercial flights between the two territories represent 24 percent of all flights using the international airport of the Macau Special Administrative Region and that 1 million tourists from Taiwan visited Macau in 2015, or an increase of 3.6 percent compared to 2014.

The population of Macau increased by 10,600 people in 2015, 1.7 percent more than in 2014, totalling 646,800 people at the end of the year, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. The Bureau also reported that 51 percent of the population was female and that the population aged over 65 years (9.0 percent of the total population) increased by 0.6 percentage points in annual terms.
