Gross revenues from gaming and gambling in Macau in March fell for the 22nd consecutive month by registering a year on year change of -16.3 percent to 17.981 billion patacas (US$2.247 billion), according to official figures. The figures reported by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) showed that gross revenues started falling in January 2014, with a drop of 3.7 percent. Since then that downward trend has continued.

The inauguration of the Exhibition Centre for Food from Portuguese Speaking Countries is the continuation of the work that the Macau government has been developing in the relationship between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, the executive member of IPIM Glória Batalha Ung, said Thursday. "From now on entrepreneurs who want to find out about products from Portuguese-speaking countries can come here to the Exhibition Centre or our electronic portal," added the executive member of the Macau Institute for Trade and Investment Promotion (IPIM) according to local Portuguese-language newspaper Tribuna de Macau.

Macau recorded a trade deficit of 10.181 billion patacas (US$1.272 billion) in January and February, a 24.1 percent improvement against the deficit recorded in the same period of 2015, reported the region's Statistics and Census Bureau. The deficit registered in the first two months of 2016 was due to the fact that exports grew 2.1 percent to 1.682 billion patacas and imports fell by 21.2 percent to 11.864 billion patacas.

Macau should return to economic growth in 2017, the year in which, according to experts from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) there will be a return to positive values with a real rate of 4.6 percent, according to the latest report on the territory. This positive growth rate occurs after three consecutive years of negative growth, of minus 0.9 percent in 2014, minus 20.3 percent in 2015 and a forecast for this year of minus 2.7 percent.

Macau received 5.09 million visitors in January and February, a decrease of 1.0 percent compared to the same period of 2015, reported the region's Statistics and Census Bureau. The Bureau also said the number of visitors from mainland China - 3.45 million or 68 percent of the total - fell 3.1 percent in annual terms, in contrast to South Korea (132,200) and Taiwan (172.4000), which saw increases of 5.8 percent and 14.1 percent, respectively.

The 2016 of the Macau International Environmental Cooperation Forum (MIECF) has 50 participants from Portuguese-speaking countries, said Irene Lau, executive director of the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM). Under the theme "Green Economy - Opportunities for Waste Management", from 31 march to 16 April MIECF 2016 will bring 400 organisations from 19 countries and regions and 45 speakers to Macau.

Annual inflation in Macau in February showed a 3.88 percent increase, marginally higher than that recorded in January (+ 3.81 percent), reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. The bureau explained the growth seen in February with rising prices of meals bought away from home, the rise in rents of car parks and houses, as well as the increase in prices of vegetables.

The President of the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) said in Taipei that trade between Macau and Taiwan reached US$181 million in 2015, representing an increase of 1.3 percent over the previous year . Jackson Chang also recalled, at a seminar on the exchange between companies from Macau and Taiwan, that commercial flights between the two territories represent 24 percent of all flights using the international airport of the Macau Special Administrative Region and that 1 million tourists from Taiwan visited Macau in 2015, or an increase of 3.6 percent compared to 2014.

The population of Macau increased by 10,600 people in 2015, 1.7 percent more than in 2014, totalling 646,800 people at the end of the year, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. The Bureau also reported that 51 percent of the population was female and that the population aged over 65 years (9.0 percent of the total population) increased by 0.6 percentage points in annual terms.

The offices of the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) in 2015 supported business estimated at over 3 billion patacas (US$375 million) between mainland China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, according to information from the institute. IPIM has Liaison Offices in the provinces of Zhejiang (Hangzhou), Sichuan (Chengdu), Guangdong (Jieyang), Liaoning (Shenyang) and Fujian (Fuzhou).

Gross revenue from Macau's casinos fell again in February, for the 21st consecutive month, although the annual percentage change was negative by just 0.1 percent, reported the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) . The data released Tuesday showed that gross revenue totalled 19.521 billion patacas (US$2.440 billion), compared to 19.542 billion patacas in February 2015.

Macau's balance of trade deficit recorded a 21 percent improvement in January due to a contraction of 1.579 billion patacas in goods imports, reported the region's Statistics and Census Bureau. In January Macau imported goods worth 6.956 billion patacas, against 9.493 billion patacas a year earlier, which together with an increase 1.5 percent in exports to 973 million patacas caused the trade deficit to contract from 7.576 billion patacas in January 2015 to 5.982 billion patacas this year.

In January Macau received 2.44 million visitors, a figure which represents a decrease of 0.8 percent year on year and 7.1 percent compared to December 2015, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. In the first month of the year visitors remained in the territory for an average of 1.2 days, or an extra 0.3 days compared to the same month of 2015.

The Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) attended the "Asia-Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expo 2016" (AIME 2016) which ended Wednesday in Melbourne, Australia, in order to attract more conventions and exhibitions from the Asia-Pacific region to Macau. The mission organised by IPIM, which since January has been responsible for coordination and external promotion of the Macau Convention and Exhibition industry, was headed by the executive member of the institute Va Kuan Lau institute and included officials from Macau's tourism, hotel, travel agency and operators and event managers.

Annual inflation in Macau registered an annual increase of 3.81 percent in January, reversing the downward trend observed since May 2015, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau. Growth in January was driven mainly by a sharp rise in vegetable prices, the increase in the prices of meals bought outside the home, as well as house rents and car parks, the Bureau said.

The first stone of the tourism project in the islet of Santa Maria in Praia, the capital of Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), was laid Monday by Chinese businessman David Chow who is also consul of the archipelago in Macau, the Cape Verdean press reported. The Prime Minister of Cabo Verde, who attended the ceremony, said this project would make Cabo Verde reach a higher level of tourism, developing both tourism and other economic sectors and creating many jobs.

Trade between Macau and the city of Zhongshan in 2015 increased 13.9 percent over the previous year and reached US$230 million, the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) said Monday. The announcement was made after a meeting in Macau between a delegation from Zhongshan headed by the vice president of the Chinese municipality Yang Wen Long, the president and executive member of the IPIM, Jackson Chang and Glória Ung, respectively, to discuss bilateral cooperation agreements signed in 2015.
