Sao Tome and Principe saw income of 133.200 billion dobras (US$5.7 million) from January to September 2016 from cocoa sales, a product that accounted for 95.4% of exports of agricultural products in the period, according to a report published on Monday by the West African archipelago's National Statistics Institute (INE). INE added that in terms of nominal values in dobras (the Sao Tome currency) there was an annual increase of 58.7% due to "improvement in the price of cocoa" on the international market.

Japan has granted food aid consisting of 3,000 tons of rice to Sao Tome and Principe, with a market value of 240 million yen (US$1.87 million), the Sao Tome Minister for Foreign Affairs said on Thursday in Sao Tome. The announcement was made after the signing of the new food aid agreement for 2016 and the document was signed by Minister Urbino Botelho on behalf of Sao Tome and Japan's ambassador Masaaki Sato, on behalf of the Japanese government.

Trade between China and Portuguese-speaking countries fell 11.22% in the first eight months of the year compared to the same period of 2015, according to figures from the Chinese Customs Services, released by the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macau Forum). According to official statistics the trade between China and Portuguese-speaking countries in the first eight months of the year reached US$60.23 billion.

Angola is among the top 10 countries where it is more difficult to do business, according to the World Bank Group "Doing Business 2017- Equal Opportunities for All" report, which assesses 190 countries. The World Bank report concludes that 137 countries have undertaken reforms to improve the business climate in 2015/16, 20% more than last year.

Sao Tome and Principe and Equatorial Guinea have resumed talks to create a partnership for oil exploration on their common border, announced Tuesday the new Equatorial Guinea ambassador, Paulino Ekobo, resident in Sao Tome. After the President of Sao Tome, Evaristo Carvalho, received his letter of credentials, Paulino Ekopo said oil exploration was one of the priority areas of his diplomatic mission within the framework of cooperation between Equatorial Guinea and Sao Tome and Principe.

The government of Sao Tome and Principe should make "a redoubled effort" in terms of tax to achieve the goals the IMF wants to see completed by December, the deputy director of the IMF's Africa Department said in Sao Tome. "It has been found that on a tax level a redoubled effort is required to achieve the goals set for December and in terms of structural reforms it is necessary to move a little faster," said David Owen.

Macau Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On, said in Lisbon that his government is studying the creation of a complex in Macau which will incorporate the various initiatives that are underway to promote Macau as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries . According to a statement from the Government Information Bureau (GCS), the centre will be housed in a single building and bring together interests in economic and commercial areas, offering services for companies, organisation of fairs, meetings and cultural exhibitions and professional training.

Sao Tome and Principe and Portugal signed a new Strategic Cooperation Programme (PEC), valued at 57.5 million euros, valid for five years, Portugal’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday in Sao Tome. Teresa Ribeiro signed the document on behalf of the Portuguese State and the Sao Tome minister of Economy and International Cooperation, Agostinho Fernandes signed for Sao Tome and Principe.

Sao Tome and Principe will have a tourist information website that will be launched by the end of the month, said the manager of "Welcome to", a project that aims to develop a digital platform for tourist information about the Portuguese-speaking countries. "We started in Angola ( 'Welcome to Angola'), four years ago, as the country was in a period of great economic growth and various components allowed to start there," Paulo Costa told Portuguese news agency Lusa.

The World Bank and the European Investment Bank (EIB) will provide US$29 million to finance modernisation work for the Sao Tome and Principe electricity sector, under an agreement signed on Monday in Sao Tome. The document was signed by Clara Sousa, representing the World Bank and the Sao Tome Minister of Finance and Public Administration, Américo Ramos, on behalf of the Sao Tome and Principe government.

The government of São Tomé and Príncipe will this month launch an international tender to adapt the country’s ATMs to the international system so they can handle Visa cards, among others, the head of the central bank announced. Maria do Carmo Silveira, governor of the Central Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe, told Lusa news agency that the country’s situation was complex, because it wants to attract tourists but does not have a banking system that permits international bank cards.

Sao Tome and Principe travel agency JBC Travel and Tours on 30 August is due to start flights between São Tomé and Lisbon, Portugal, via Johannesburg, South Africa, the company's managing director, Bilssen Coelho said on Monday. The flights, which will be offered three times a week, Coelho said, will use an Airbus aircraft with a capacity of up to 150 passengers.

Airlines from Angola, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe are still banned from flying in European Union (EU) air space, according to the black list published Thursday by the European Commission. In Angola's case the only exception is flagship airline TAAG, which is permitted to fly in the whole of the EU air space, subject to restrictions on the types of aircraft it uses.

French company Malongo Mane plans to invest over US$10 million on coffee plantations on the island of Sao Tome, as part of a contract due to be signed Wednesday in the capital of Sao Tome and Principe by the company and the Sao Tome government, announced the Minister for Agriculture, Teodorico de Campos.
