Economist Rodrigo Manuel Ferreira Brum will take on the role of Deputy Secretary-General of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macau) at the suggestion of Portugal, the Consul General of Portugal in Macau said on Friday. The Consul General Vítor Sereno also said the delegate of the Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade of Portugal in Macau, Maria João Bonifácio, will be the new delegate for Portugal at Forum Macau, replacing him in the role.

Trade between China and Portuguese-speaking countries totalled US$8.281 billion in January 2017, which was a year-on-year increase of 7.52%, according to official figures from China released by Forum Macau. Angola and Brazil accounted in January for 92% of trade between China and the eight Portuguese-speaking countries with a total of US$7.625 billion.

The ambassadors of Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and Timor-Leste (East Timor) in China expressed the appreciation of their respective governments for the results achieved in economic and trade cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, according to official information published in Macau.

Twelve companies have submitted proposals to the public tender for design and construction of the Services Complex for Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, said the Macau Lands, Public Works and Transport Bureau. The future Services Complex will be located in central area of the Macau peninsula an area of about 14,200 m2, and the construction work is likely to start in the third quarter of 2017 and have a maximum deadline of 20 months.

Portugal is the Portuguese-speaking country placed highest in the Index of Economic Freedom of the American Heritage Foundation and Timor-Leste (East Timor) is classified lowest, according to the report for 2017 released by the foundation. Portugal was included in the group of moderately free countries, in fact the only one of eight Portuguese-speaking nations, but fell by 2.5 points compared to its score for 2016, with 62.6 points and now standing in 77th place out of 180 countries.

The Fund for Development Cooperation between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries has approved funding for a solar energy project in Brazil and is "analysing half a dozen projects," said Wednesday in Macau the Deputy Director General of the fund's management department. Song Feng said that in addition to the two projects already approved for Angola and Mozambique, the project now approved for Brazil, which aims to eventually produce 200 megawatts of electricity, represents an investment of US$200 million, US$20 million of which will be provided by the Fund.

A presentation session of the China-Portuguese Speaking Countries Cooperation and Development Fund and the investment framework for investment in Portuguese-speaking countries is due to take place on 25 January in Macau, organised by the Macau Institute for Trade and Investment Promotion (IPIM). This session is co-organised by the Macau Economic Service, the Finance Services Bureau and the Macau Monetary Authority and support is provided by the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries.

Australia and Timor-Leste are engaged in the conciliation process to resolve disagreements between the two countries on boundaries in the Timor Sea, according to a joint statement issued by the two countries and the UN Conciliation Commission. The joint statement added that from 10 to 13 October 2016, the governments of both countries took part in a number of meetings convened by the Conciliation Commission, the parties agreed a set of measures to facilitate the process of reconciliation and to reach a permanent agreement on maritime boundaries in the Timor Sea.

Air Timor, which from Tuesday suspended its flights between Dili and Denpasar (Bali), has blamed the government of Timor-Leste for decisions that led to it losing US$3 million in 2016, the company said in statement in the Timorese capital. Specifically, the company said in a statement, the decision to grant a license to a third party to fly to Dili led to overcapacity on the route, occupancy rates of less than 50% and consequent daily losses of US$10,000.

The Special Exhibition of Food Products from Portuguese Speaking Countries will remain open until 30 June, 2017 in order to allow more people and traders to get to know those products, said the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), the exhibition's organiser. The Special Exhibition of Food Products from Portuguese Speaking Countries includes a variety of wines, canned foods, processed foods, spices, coffee, tea, milk, juices and other food products especially selected from Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and Timor-Leste (East Timor).

Brazilian operator Oi said it had requested legal permission to sell its stake in Timor Telecom to the Investel Communications Limited group owned by Timorese businessman Abilio Araújo, for US$62 million. In a press release, the company - which is in bankruptcy protection - filed the request with a Rio de Janeiro district court to sell the asset.

The projects of the African Portuguese Speaking Countries and Timor-Leste (PALOP-TL) financed by the European Union will be finalised on Thursday and Friday during technical meetings held in Praia, the capital of Cabo Verde (Cape Verde). The ministerial meeting on Friday, which will assess the projects to be financed by the 11th European Development Fund, with the participation of the Director General for International Cooperation and Development of the European Commission, Stefano Manservisi.
